Peter Gorman III

A ferocious competitor on the pitch and a beloved friend off it, Pete packed a lot into his 22 years and 53 days of life. His sudden death in October 1978 was a gut-punch to the club he'd joined at its founding three years earlier. Teammate Matt McGlone compared Pete to the legendary All Black Jonah Lomu- both were fast, agile, and unusually large for wingers. And opponents feared being tackled by them. He helped lead Towson to an undefeated season in Spring 1976 and a series of Potomac Rugby Union division titles. The school felt his loss, too: coming to Towson out of Baltimore Polytechnic HS, Pete immersed himself into the life of the campus and student leadership. At a time when the club had to scrap for every dollar, his charm and good looks made him a natural fundraiser whether the club was selling hotdogs or roses in front of the Union. One of the originators, with his close friend Russ Clark, of the Rugby Road award, Pete exemplified what Rugby Road recipients are still judged by today: outstanding leadership, especially towards younger ruggers.
