Matthew McGlone
A skilled and engaging player, coach, founder, mentor, and raconteur, Matt took on many roles in starting and helping sustain Towson Rugby for much of its first half century. Returning home after being discharged from active duty in the Navy in 1972, he began his long association with the sport playing for the legendary coach and orthopedic surgeon Bill Howard at Baltimore (now BaltimoreChesapeake) RFC. After two practices, he joined the club on a bus trip to White Plains, NY, as a C-side winger. Mid-match, he tackled an opponent. Back on their feet, the player punched Matt in the mouth. Stunned, he turned to his coach and asked, "Can he do that?" Howard's laconic (and classic) response was, "He just did." Afterwards, Matt - as avid a student as he is a teacher - immersed himself in all things rugby, from skills to strategy to singing. His love and knowledge of the sport quickly came in handy: in 1974, he was asked to assist with a new team at Mt. St. Mary's and the following year, he became a co-founder of Towson State RFC.
